What are Uber & Lyft’s Insurance Policies?

Uber & Lyft both carry insurance policies for their drivers. The insurance coverage depends on whether the driver had a passenger at the time of an accident.

Uber’s insurance coverage is divided into three periods. Periods two and three are when there is a passenger in the Uber vehicle, or the Uber driver is on their way to pick up a passenger. In these situations, Uber’s insurance policy covers $1 million per accident for bodily injuries and property damage and $1 million per accident for bodily injuries if the accident was caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver.

If an Uber driver is waiting to match with a rider and causes an Uber accident, the coverage is lower. In such situations, Uber’s insurance policy covers the following:

  • $50,000 liability coverage per person
  • $100,000 liability coverage per auto accident
  • $25,000 in property damage coverage

The above coverage only applies if the driver’s personal coverage is lower than these limits or if the driver’s insurer refuses to cover the Uber accident.

If the driver does not have a passenger in the rideshare motor vehicle and does not have the Uber app open, the driver’s own personal insurance policy must cover the accident.

Uber & Lyft have the same insurance coverage limits.

Can I Still Use Uber or Lyft if I File a Claim?

It is possible to lose access to an Uber or Lyft account during the claims process. When accepting service from a rideshare company, a rider also accepts the company’s Terms of Use. Part of the Terms of Use is an agreement allowing a rider’s account to be deactivated in the event the rider breaches their contract with the rideshare company.
