New Jersey Residents Injured and Killed in Train Accidents
There have been several cases in the news recently about New Jersey residents injured or killed in accidents involving trains.
- In Asbury Park, a man was killed after he reportedly jumped into the middle of the tracks and laid down at the Sixth Avenue railroad crossing. He was struck by a North Jersey Central Line train from Hoboken headed towards Bay Head.
- A man was killed and a woman was injured in Trenton when a New Jersey Transit train traveling northbound on the River Line struck their car that was stuck on the tracks at Lalor Street and Route 129. The crossing gates were lowered at the time of the crash.
- In Ocean Township, New Jersey, two people were injured when their pickup truck collided with a New Jersey Transit train bound for New York City. The driver, who suffered a broken leg in the accident, was charged with reckless driving and interfering with transportation.
- In Montvale, New Jersey, a New Jersey Transit train collided with a car at the Kinderhook Road crossing. The car was driven by a 16-year-old who reportedly panicked when the crossing gate started coming down. She drove onto the tracks and her two passengers got out of the car before it was hit. She suffered only minor injuries.
In 2013, at least 27 people were killed in accidents involving New Jersey Transit trains. Many of the accidents were due to drivers going around or trying to beat crossing gates.
The third worse train disaster in US history occurred in 1951 in Woodbridge, New Jersey. A train derailed while crossing a temporary wooden trestle, and 85 people were killed.
