Helping Hudson County Dog Bite Victims

Unlike in some other states, New Jersey dogs are not entitled to “one free bite.”A dog owner can be liable to a dog bite victim in Hudson County even if the dog has never bitten anyone before.

Under New Jersey law, dogs should be restrained or in secure areas at all times. Dogs must be kept on leashes when out for a walk, except when in designated dog runs or parks. At home, dogs must be adequately secured and unable to jump over or escape through fences.

If you’ve been bitten by a dog in Hudson County, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. To prevail in a lawsuit, you must be able to identify the dog and its owner. If the dog has no tags and is running loose, this may be difficult to do.

If you can do so without endangering yourself, take a picture of the dog. If it’s apparent which property the dog came from, take a picture of the property and/or note the address.

Notify the police immediately in the event of a dog bite. They may be able to help identify the dog and its owner, and animal control officers may be able to find and restrain the dog before it injures anyone else.

Rabies is a serious and often fatal disease caused by animal bites. It can be nipped in the bud if the victim receives early treatment. Identifying the dog responsible for the bite allows it to be tested for rabies, and can expedite rabies treatment for the victim.

If you have been bitten by a dog or any other animal, immediately wash the wound with hot water and soap, seek professional medical attention, and notify your local Hudson County Board of Health. Then contact an experienced animal bite attorney who can help you seek compensation for your injuries.
