Most Dangerous Roads Around MetLife Stadium During the 2026 FIFA World Cup

This year’s FIFA World Cup Final is set to take place on July 19, 2026, at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium (NYNJ Stadium). For people living in the New York and New Jersey region, this major sporting event will lead to a massive increase in traffic and potential personal injury risks. Hundreds of thousands of soccer fans will be flooding the area for the Final, creating unprecedented traffic congestion in Bergen and Hudson Counties.

Why the 2026 World Cup Spikes Car Accident Risks in East Rutherford

Currently, nearly 80,000 spectators are expected to attend each of the eight matches scheduled for the FIFA World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium on June 13, 16, 22, 25, 27, 30 and July 5 and 19. This means hundreds of thousands of people will be traveling to East Rutherford, New Jersey, in the days and weeks leading up to the event – creating a huge surge in traffic on local roads and highways.

While FIFA is pushing fans to use public NJ Transit to attend the World Cup Final in East Rutherford (public transportation tickets to the stadium will be reserved exclusively for ticketholders on match days), a large percentage of fans plan to drive themselves, arrange private transportation or rely on rideshare to get to the Stadium.

Locals in the Meadowlands should expect extremely heavy traffic congestion, especially on game days. Furthermore, many people on the road for the World Cup will be new and unfamiliar to the area, in a rush to get to or from MetLife Stadium, driving aggressively, or potentially intoxicated by alcohol. All of these factors greatly increase the odds of motor vehicle accidents in East Rutherford during this time.

High-Risk Roads Surrounding MetLife Stadium

The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final has been designated as a “major traffic event” by New Jersey officials due to expected gridlock. Transportation authorities have warned of severe traffic congestion around the stadium and urged anyone in the area during the event to avoid unnecessary travel.

Some of the roads anticipated to be at the highest risk of heavy traffic and potential accidents are Route 3, I-95, the New Jersey Turnpike Western Spur, Route 120, Route 17 and I-80. If you must travel on these routes on match days, expect massive increases in traffic volume, altered traffic patterns and significant delays.

Dangerous Rideshare Conditions and Traffic Chaos Caused by Stadium Rules

On World Cup Final match days, MetLife Stadium will not be permitting private vehicle drop-offs on stadium grounds due to restricted vehicle access. This means anyone traveling to the World Cup by rideshare must be dropped off at Meadowlands Racing and Entertainment and use a pedestrian walking path to the Stadium gates (1.3 miles).

The massive influx of Ubers and Uber Shuttles near the NYNJ Stadium on match days will likely increase the odds of related rideshare accidents. Remote pickup locations, long walks near traffic-heavy roads, confusing detours and increased traffic congestion are expected to create immense hazards for rideshare drivers, riders and pedestrians alike.

Pedestrian Hazards and Strict Road Walking Prohibitions Near the Complex

The flood of people walking to, near and around MetLife Stadium for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final will create extremely dangerous conditions for pedestrians. Traffic officials strictly prohibit walking on the road near the complex on match days.

Unfortunately, the pedestrian infrastructure around the Stadium is not suited for the high volume of people expected. Some surrounding roads do not have sidewalks, while others require pedestrians to cross multiple lanes of traffic.

If pedestrians attempt to reach the stadium on foot despite the “No Pedestrians” signs that officials have already installed on nearby access roads, they will be at significant risk of getting hit by a car
