Top Causes of Auto Accidents in 2019

Car accidents are happening every second, each one different from the next. While every accident is unique, there are underlying commonalities when determining the cause of nearly all crashes. In fact, the majority of car accidents can be attributed to three preventable driving behaviors.

Driving Under the Influence

There is no question, driving under the influence is one of the riskiest things anyone can do. Not only is it severely dangerous for the driver, but for all others on the road who are completely innocent. Intoxication reduces a driver’s ability to perform, react quickly, or make a sound decision when behind the wheel. No matter how experienced a driver may be, even the slightest amount of alcohol or drugs in one’s system can adversely affect his or her ability to safely maneuver a vehicle. Intoxicated drivers are more prevalent on weekend nights and holidays due to the influx of celebrations and partying.

Distracted Driving

Thanks to our shortened attention spans and unlimited access to everything smartphones have to offer, distraction is a rampant cause of car accidents. Many drivers believe they are completely attentive just because they are not texting or talking on the phone, though this is not always the case. Distraction goes far beyond cell phone use as most vehicles feature touch-screen or voice command infotainment centers.

Drivers must focus their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel at all times. The following are further examples of seemingly harmless yet extremely dangerous driving behaviors, including but not limited to:

  • Talking to passengers
  • Reaching over the seat
  • Dealing with children or pets in the backseat
  • Fiddling with radio and music controls

Reckless Driving

Reckless driving is a blanket term for aggressive behavior such as speeding, tailgating, sudden lane changes, unnecessary honking, etc. Speed limits are not arbitrary and are enforced for public safety, as nearly every preventable accident involved a driver who was going too fast. Everyone experiences the anger of being stuck in traffic after a long day or the anxiety of running late to work in the morning, but these emotions should never translate onto the road.
